Introduction of College of Basic Medical Sciences (CBMS)

College of Basic Medical Sciences (CBMS) was established in 1952. The college consistis of 2 departments (Department of Biotechnology, Department of Biological Sciences), 11 teaching and research sections (Anatomy, Histology & Embryology, Physiology, Pathophysiology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Pathology & Forensic medicine and Microecology), and an Experimental Teaching Center for Basic Medical Sciences (including Laboratories of Biological Functions, Morphology, Anatomy, Pathogen Biology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology). Department of Biotechnology has 3 specialties including Biotechnology, Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Biomedical engineering.

The college has 5 provincial key disciplines (Physiology, Human anatomy and histoembryology, Pathology and pathophysiology, Pathogen biology, Biochemistry & molecular biology) and 2 first-level distinguished disciplines (Basic Medical Sciences, Biology). There are 2 doctoral degree authorization units, 2 master’s degree authorization units, and 2 postdoctoral training stations in biology and preclinical medicine.

Up to date , CBMS has 248 faculty members, including 55 full professors, 65 associate professors, 65 lecturers, 56 technicians and 7 administrative staffs. 29 faculty members serve as thesis advisors for doctoral degrees. There are currently 708 full-time students (61 Ph.D studnets, 287 master students and 360 bachelor students).

CBMS successfully carried out the multi-level programs of teaching, providing more than 140 courses of basic medical sciences for undergraduates majored in various subjects, and also responsible for the lectures of doctoral candidates, master’s candidates and foreign students. The college also places great emphasis on the internationalization of advanced education and cooperates with many top-flight medical colleges and institutions in foreign countries.

2.Teaching and research sections
Department of anatomy
Department of anatomy was established in July, 1950. Up to now, there are 18 faculty members in the department, including 6 full professors, 3 associate professors and 9 lecturers. The main courses provided for undergraduates and graduate students include human anatomy, systematic anatomy, regional anatomy and sectional anatomy. The research of the department is mainly focused on applied anatomy and clinical anatomy, the glial function and disease in CNS, mechanisms of learning and memory, anthropology and so on.

Histology and Embryology Department
Histology and Embryology Department was established in 1947, There are now 14 faculty members in the department, including 6 professors, 6 associated professors, and 2 technicians. The course of Histology and Embryology are provided to undergraduates and graduate students. The main research field of the apartment include exploring of new molecular markers of human cancers; retinal degeneration and cell-based tissue engineering.

The Department of Physiology
The department of Physiology in Dalian Medical University was established by the famous psychologist and educator, Professor Wu Xiang in 1949. It has 20 staff on its payroll, including 9 full professors, 4 associate professors, 4 lecturers, 2 technichans。It is responsible for the teaching tasks of physiology, neuroscience, functional laboratory science, anesthesia physiology etc for undergraduate, seven-year system students, postgraduate, international students. Its main researches are targeted for the nervous, digestive, blood circulation and kidney.

Department of Pathophysiology
Department of pathophysiology was founded in 1956, which is one of the earliest pathophysiology discipline in northeast China. There are 13 faculty members in department, including 5 full professors, 4 associate professors, 3 lectures and 1 technician. The main courses, which be provided for undergraduates and graduate students, include pathophysiology and clinical pathophysiology. The research interests of the department is mainly focused on mechanisms of tumorigenesis and pathophysiological mechanisms of digestive system.

Department of biochemistry and molecular biology
Department of biochemistry and molecular biology was set up by biochemist profession Li, Changpu and Lin, Juncai in 1949. There are 24 faculty members in the department including 9 professors, 10 associated professors and 5 lectures. The main courses, which be provided for undergraduates and graduate students, include Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The present scientific research of the department are mainly focus on oligosaccharides with embryo development and implantation research, oligosaccharide surface characteristics of tumor cells and tumor metastasis, glycolipids and cell transmembrane signal transduction, key enzyme metabolic regulation on sugar synthesis of TB cytoderm and glycoimmunology research and the MALDI-TOF-MS facilitates the analysis of glycostructures.
 
Department of Cell Biology
The Department of Cell Biology (DCB) was established in 1950. There are 13 faculty members including 2 professors, 6 associated professors, 2 lectures and 3 technicians. Cell biology as the main course is provided for undergraduates and graduate student. Main research interests of DCB include genetic and epigenetic backgrounds of gastric cancers occurring in Dalian, a high risk GC region; cellular and molecular biology and experimental therapeutics of primary brain malignancies; evaluation of therapeutic values, molecular targets and optimal administration approaches of resveratrol as an anticancer agent; effects of resveratrol on neuronal trauma and repair.

The Department of Human Parasitology
The Department of Human Parasitology was founded in 1947. Up to now, there are 5 faculty members in the department, including one professor and 2 associate professors, one lecturer and one senior technician. The main course, which be provided for undergraduates, is Medical Parasitology.

Department of Immunology
Department of Immunology was established in 2001. There are 9 faculty members in the department now, including 2 professors, 2 associated professors, 4 lecturers and 1 technician. The department is responsible for teaching 《Medical Immunology》, 《Molecular Immunology》 for the students at level of graduate, post-graduate and foreign students. Medical Immunology is one of the core courses for the students majoring clinical medicine. The research fields in the department cover the inflammation and immunity, mechanism during the development of autoimmune diseases.

The Department of Biotechnology
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2010. There are 21 faculty members in the department, including 3 full professors, 6 associated professors, 6 lecutures and 6 technicians. The department offers undergraduate training in biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals and bioengineering. The graduate program of the department offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biotechnology, designed to qualify persons for continued graduate or postdoc work at the higher level and for employment in various fields of biology, including certain fields of applied biology. The research fields in the department cover the biochemistry and glycobiology of bacteria and interaction between bacteria and host, disease proteomics and systematic biology and modification of pentacyclic triterpenes compounds and their antitumor activity and mechanism, and so on.

Department of Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology was established in the 1949 by Prof. Wei, Xi, one of the pioneers in the field of Microbiology in our country. Now, there are 10 faculty members, including 3 professors, 4 associate professors, 3 lectures. The main research field mainly focus on cancer biotherapy by fungal proteins and the neurogenesis regulation by microbes. The Medical Microbiology and the Cell Culture courses are opened to undergraduate and graduate students.

Department of Microecology
Department of Microecology was established in 1986, Kang Bai is the first director of the Department. The current director is Professor Tang, Li. There are 7 faculty members, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 2 lecturers and 1 experimental technician. The main research direction is the relationship between normal microbiota and the host, including gut microbiota, respiratory microbiota, urogenital tract microbiota and microecological regulator. Microecology course is opened to undergraduates.

Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine
The Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine was established in 1947 by Prof. Yang Jian who is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The department contains two Key Laboratories of Liaoning Provincial University. The department is comprised of 27 faculty members, including 6 professors, 4 associate professors, 12 lectures and 4 technicians. From that beginning, the department grows fast. The Department undertakes the teaching task of Pathology course for undergraduate, graduate and international students.

3.Experimental Teaching Center for Basic Medical Sciences
Laboratory of Human Anatomy
Human anatomy laboratory was set up in October, 2008. The director of the laboratory is Professor Xu, Fei. There are 6 technicians working on teaching preparation in the laboratory. Every anatomy classroom has multimedia equipments, cryogenic cold storage and digital human anatomy system. The laboratory runs with 13 conventional rooms, one sectional anatomy room and a 500 m2 human specimen’s review room. The laboratory provides support for 5 related experimental courses (Human systematic anatomy, human regional anatomy, imaging anatomy of human body sections, anesthesia anatomy and neuroscience). Human anatomy laboratory open throughout the day. The students can learn at any time.
 
Laboratory of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory was founded in Sep., 2006. Currently, the lab has 3 faculty members including 1 full professor, 1 senior technician and 1 technician. The laboratory is responsible for two experimental courses comprising Molecular Biology and Biochemistry for undergraduates and graduate students.
 
Laboratory of Biological Function
The Biological Function Laboratory was established in July, 1998. There are 9 faculty members including one full professor, 2 lecturers and 6 technicians working in the laboratory. All of basic functional experiments, comprehensive experiments and innovative experiments for undergraduate, graduate and international students can be performed in this lab. For excellent teaching achievement, the lab has ever obtained ordinary university teaching achievement of Liaoning province award two times.
 
Laboratory of Pathogen Biology
Pathogenic biology laboratory was established in July, 2006. It is composed of medical microbiology, parasitology and immunology laboratory. There are 8 faculty members working in the laboratory, including 1 associate professor and 8 technicians. The laboratory has 8 experimental teaching rooms, 3 experimental preparation rooms and 1 parasitology specimen display room and opens to all the students in the university.
 
Laboratory of Morphology
Morphology laboratory was founded in June, 2004. There are 9 faculty members including 1 full professor, 1 associate professor and 7 technicians. The laboratory has 4 classrooms with digital microscopic interactive system and 6 classrooms with totally 500 Olympus and Nikon light microscopes. The laboratory also has a showroom with human pathological organ specimens, 2 classrooms for studying pathological organ specimens, and 3 cell culture rooms. The laboratory is responsible for experimental studies of pathology, histoembryology, cell biology and genetics. 

4.Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory
Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Biology
Provincial Key Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Biology in CBMS of Dalian Medical University was approved in 1993 by Science and Technology Department of Liaoning province. The laboratory is opened to faculties and graduate students, and provides technical supports.

Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Cerebral Diseases
Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Cerebral Diseases in CBMS of the Dalian Medical University was established in March, 2005 and recognized by Science and Technology Department of Liaoning province. The laboratory is committed to the research of neuroprotection and neuroregeneration. It is composed of seven research groups, working on neurobehavioral, neuroanatomy, neuroelectrophysiology, cytology, neurochemistry, molecular neurobiology and bioinformatics. The laboratory owns more than 150 instruments including living cell workstation, patch-clamp system, fluorescence microscope with imaging system, low pressure chromatography system, microtome-Cryostat, stereotaxic apparatus.

Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Glycobiology and Glycoengineering
The glycomics is the new field of biological science after genomics and proteomics. The glycomics deals with the structures, functions and the biosynthesis regulation of the sugar molecules (monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates) in specific physiological processes and pathological status. The research of glycobiology initiated in early 1970s in the department of Dalian Medical University. Glycobiology Institute was set up in 1999 and was given the official approval for Liaoning Provincial Core Lab of Glycobiology and Glycoengineering in 2005. In the following years, provincial educational administration honored the institute with the name of Liaoning Provincial Glycol Research Innovation Team. Currently, there are 26 researchers in Glycobiology Core Lab with over 30 grant supports including 973 project, National Natural Science Foundation projects, Awards of Liaoning Provincial Innovation Team, and Liaoning Provincial Natural Science Fund projects. In 2013, the laboratory hosted the 22nd International Glycoconjugate Conference (Dalian). Over 400 scientists and researchers of “sugar” field from >20 countries communicated the new advances and achievements during the meeting. National prize for technological inventions (second grade) was awarded in 2014. The translational medicine based on the sugar research is moving forward quickly.

Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics
Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics was approved by Science and Technology Department of Liaoning province at June, 2006.

Main Research Interests:
(1)Genetic and Epigenetic backgrounds of gastric cancers occurring in Dalian, a high risk GC region

Facilities and their functions:
(1)DNA room: DNA isolation and genetic and epigenetic analyses.
(2)RNA room: RNA isolation, RT-PCR, RT-qPCR, electrophoresis and Northern blotting.
(3)Protein room: Protein preparation, electrophoresis for Western blotting and proteomic analyses.
(4)Pathology room: Microtomes for paraffin blocks and frozen tissues; histological and immunohistochemical staining.
(5)Common room: The equipments for measuring nucleic acid and protein concentrations, for MTT assay, for living cell counting, for different speed centrifugation.
(6)Cell and tissue culture rooms: For cell expansion, treatments and observation; tissue culture and treatments.
(7)Dark room: Autoradiography; gel photography; immunofluorescent observation and photography.
(8)Cold room: 12m2 in space; as storage and for low temperature performance.
(9)Cell bank: Collection of over 50 immortalized and cancer lines including 5 medulloblastoma, 17 glioblastoma, 6 thyroid cancer, 5 gastric cancer, 6 skin squamous cell carcinoma cell lines. These cell lines are original and obtained from reliable sources.
(10)Tumor bank: Collection of about 250 cases of fresh gastric cancer specimens and, where possible, the noncancerous epithelia; about 100 cases of glioblastoma specimens and about 50 cases of medulloblastoma samples. The filled patients’ consent forms are available.
 
Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Organism Microecology and Disease Control
Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Organism Microecology and Disease Control was approved in November, 2009 by Science and Technology Department of Liaoning Province. The main research directions of the laboratory include the basic microecology research, airway bacteria and respiratory diseases, and probiotics research. The laboratory is currently supported by 2 National "973" Projects, 2 National "863" Projects, 1 “twelfth five-year" science and technology support project and 5 National Natural Science Funds.
