School of Laboratory Medicine
1. Introduction
The Laboratory Medicine College of Dalian Medical University is the earliest laboratory medicine college in China. The root of it can be traced back to laboratory medicine major class which was approved by Military Commission and State Education Commission in 1952. In 1986, department of laboratory medicine was subsequently established and in 1987 it enrolled undergraduate students in medicine laboratory, as well as Master of clinical diagnostics (since 2000) and Doctoral degree (since 2010) in clinical diagnostics. In 2001, it changed its name to Laboratory Medicine College.
The medical laboratory major of our college is a national education quality engineering specialty, and a provincial demonstration model. The college is a member of the national medical laboratory education committee. It is also an organizer of Medical Laboratory Education.
During the rapid growth in the past decade, 8 departments were founded. They are Immunologicao and Microbiological Laboratory Techniques Section(Health Quarantine), Biochemistry Laboratory Techniques Section, Chemical Laboratory Techniques Section(Health Laboratory Science), Medical Basis Laboratory Techniques Section,Hematology Laboratory Techniques Section, Haematological Pathology Section, Transfusion Medicine Section, Midical Physical Section. Besides that, it has two center laboratory including Laboratory Medicine Lab and Midical Physical Laboratory, and the two clinical laboratories of first affiliated hospital and second affiliated hospital in our university.
There are 49 faculties in our college including 32 full-time teachers (8 professors, 17 associate professors, 7 lecturers). There are 4 doctoral supervisors and 11 Master supervisors, 14 teachers with PhD, 30 teachers with master degree.
2. Specialties and Educational Goal
The college offers three specialties, medical laboratory, health inspection and quarantine and laboratory hematology for bachelor degree program.
For the students who major in medical laboratory, the basic requirements are that students should master basic knowledge of clinical medical laboratory and be proficient in professional skills. After graduation, they are able to engage in all kinds of clinical medical laboratory work.
For the students who major in health inspection and quarantine, the basic requirements are that students should master basic knowledge of health inspection and quarantine, environmental monitoring and be proficient in professional skills. They will become advanced technology applied talents for supervision and inspection of the environment, food, water quality, cosmetics and biological materials.
The students of laboratory hematology should master basic knowledge of clinical medical laboratory and skills to become laboratory hematology professionals. In 2013 laboratory hematology became a subsidiary course.
3. Scientific Research and Cooperation
Our college has one open project of state key laboratory, one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. During the past few years, we chaired and participated in more than 30 scientific research programs of different levels which include 11 general programs of The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 3 programs of The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 program), one program of The National Basic Research Program of China (973 program).
More than 100 SCI English research papers were published. 4 projects were awarded by Liaoning provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards.
Besides, the college has organized more than 100 academic lectures. One professor was appointed as a famous teacher in Liaoning province, and 3 teachers were selected in “millions of Talents Project” in Liaoning province.
We have cooperated with Curtin University of Technology in Australia, Deakin University in Australia and Northern State University in USA. 16 students have been sent abroad and granted both schools’ degree. Besides that, we have cooperated with a number of international and domestic enterprises to set up a scholarship in the amount of nearly 200,000 yuan every year.
